Guided Fossil walks
Guided Fossil Walks
Fossil hunting is something I have been passionate about for over a decade. Over the years, I have spent countless hours searching the Yorkshire Coast, building up a wealth of practical experience, and uncovering everything from common ammonites, belemnites. starfish, to much rarer discoveries, such as marine reptile remains.
My guided fossil walks are designed to help you find your own fossils, while enjoying some of the best fossil hunting locations on the coast. While I am not a geologist, I have extensive experience searching these beaches, and will show you where to look, what to look for, and how to maximise your chances of finding something special.
Walks typically last between 3 and 4 hours, and can be arranged at a suitable time and location. Popular locations include Runswick Bay, Port Mulgrave, Ravenscar and Sandsend, although other locations may also be possible depending on conditions and accessibility. I will sometimes be able to go over the 4 hours, if you’d like to take longer. The times stated when booking are a rough guideline as to when we would need to arrive at the location. We can start later or earlier than them, though the earlier is always the better.
The cost of a guided fossil walk is £200 per private group, up to 6 people. If you would like to add more, please get in touch.
The Yorkshire Coast is famous for its Jurassic fossils, and depending on conditions, finds can include ammonites, belemnites, fossil wood, marine shells and other prehistoric remains. Every trip is different, and fossil hunting is never predictable. While marine reptile fossils have been found along this coastline and there is always a chance of discovering something exceptional, no specific finds can ever be guaranteed.
Safety is always a priority. The coastline can be uneven, slippery and challenging in places, so suitable footwear such as walking boots or wellington boots is strongly recommended. Participants should also dress appropriately for the weather, as coastal conditions can change quickly. We always maintain a safe distance from the cliffs due to the risk of rockfalls and unstable ground.
Please be aware that fossil hunting involves walking across natural terrain, and may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with significant mobility difficulties. If you have any concerns regarding accessibility or medical conditions, please get in touch before booking and I will be happy to discuss whether the walk is suitable.
Whether you're a complete beginner, or an experienced collector, my aim is to provide an enjoyable and memorable day out while helping you make your own discoveries and learn more about the incredible fossils hidden along our coastline.
If you would like your fossil prepared, I can also offer the service, separately to the walks.
If you would like to book a guided fossil walk or have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
